Research provided by Jason Edward Temple, based on a transcription by Rita Schumacher, revealed a fascinating story about Rafaela's disappearance. As he related it, "Charles Parker Temple... was the younger brother of my second great grandfather."

The newspaper accounts are a bit misleading, he explained, "There are numerous errors on the part of the reporters, mainly confusing Rafaela Bayse with Susanna Castino, and also Susanna's relationship with the Bayse brothers. Journalistic standards of the time are a bit different from what they are now, and some of the thing's that were printed would never be allowed to see the light of day in a newspaper nowadays.

"Charley was married to a woman by the name of Rafaela Bayse. Well, apparently Rafaela suddenly "disappeared". I don't know if she was ever found, and before long Charley had a pretty little Italian woman in tow by the name of Susanna Castino, whom he eventually married. Well the Bayse family suspected foul play and believed that Charles killed her, and the Temple family conspired to hush up the affair. Rafaela Bayse had two brothers that come into the story, James and Tomas Henriquez Bayse. The brothers swore to avenge the death of their sister and thus began the events" which resulted in a feud that was covered in the Los Angeles Times from 1899 through 1903.
