The book, "Everyman's Eden - A History of California," added that "During the early phase of military control, Commodore Robert F. Stockton set September 15, 1846 as an election day for towns and other political districts to elect alcaldes and other local officials. Since Stockton had already appointed alcaldes for most of the important areas in the province, these elections simply confirmed his earlier choices. Stockton had appointed Thomas M. Robbins as alcalde of Santa Barbara; in Los Angeles the commodore had selected John Temple and Alexander Bell, both of them Americans." He appeared in the census in 1850 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.25198 Jonathan sailed from Panama in May 1851 in San Diego, San Diego, CA.108399 Sailed from Panama on 1 May 1851, and left the Steamer Tennessee at San Diego while the ship was en route to San Francisco. (John), 1827, nat. of Mass., and brother of the preceding, who came from Hon. on the Waverly, and in the earliest years signed his name 'Jonathan.' iii. 149, 176-7. He was at once baptized at San Diego (1827), and after a few trading trips on the coast obtained naturalization and married Rafaela, daughter of Francisco Cota, in '30, engaging in trade at Los Ang., in partnership with Geo. Rice, till '32, and later alone, or with his brother from '41. ii. 558. I have some of his business corresp., but he does not figure in public affairs, except that the vigilantes of '36 met at his house. ii. 418, 539; iv. 117. In the sectional quarrels he took no part, but was glad in '39 to hear of Alvarado's final success; is named in the following years as creditor of southern missions; and in '45 was the purchaser of Purisima. iii. 595, 623; iv. 92, 553, 629, 648; v. 558. In the annals of '46-7 he is named in connection with financial matters, having Cal. claims to the amount of about $16,000. v. 49-50, 435, 467. From about '48, becoming owner of the Cerritos rancho, iii. 633, he gave his attention to stock-raising on a large scale; later he was the builder of the Temple block and other fine structures at Los Angeles; and in Maximillian's time obtained an immensely profitable lease of the Mexican mint. He died at S.F. in '66, at the age of 68. He had been an able and successful man of business, socially genial and well liked. His widow survived him, living in Paris with her daughter, Mrs Ajuria, born in 1831.

His marriage to Rafaela was quite fortunate, as she was connected to nearly every prominent family in California.

He appears in the 1850 Census as John, with real estate holdings worth $ 50,000.

Horace Bell recounted:

How long Smith remained in the employ of the State is not necessary to inquire. Suffice it to say that in 1852 he became a first-class angel, remaining here about two and a half years, and went away with Zerman. At Minatitlan Smith informed me on his honor that he had never killed any one in Los Angeles, notwithstanding, as he expressed it, he had "put the light out of at least a dozen while in California. However," said he, "I once went for old Temple's scalp, and but for an accident would have raised it, and made my pile to boot."

This is the way it was: Old John Temple used to bleed this county at the rate of about $100,000 a year, money received from his immense sales of cattle, all of which he would carry to the City of Mexico for investment. Dave Brown, Smith and another prominent person determined to waylay Temple on his way to San Pedro, murder him if necessary, but without fail to secure his bags of gold. Temple would start in the morning about sunrise, and the arrangement was that Smith, Brown Co. would leave town during the night and lay in wait in the high mustard down about Florence, stop Temple and rob him, convey the cash to the river bed and bury it in the water and sand, and wait and take their chances. Fortunately or unfortunately, as the reader may choose to regard it, about twilight on the eve of the contemplated robbery, Dave accidentally let his revolver go off on the sidewalk in front of the Bella Union and shot himself in the foot, a circumstance well remembered by many pioneers. A lucky shot for old John Temple, surely.

Temple was at one time the richest man in Mexico. He almost owned the whole Mexican government; foreclosed a mortgage on the Mint at the City of Mexico, and coined money on his own account. He owned four hundred miles of sea-coast territory above and below Acapulco, was a brother of the late F. P. F. Temple, of La Puente, and was the cutest monte dealer that ever flipped a card for an angel to bet his pile on.

Harris Newmark recalled:

Juan Temple owned the Los Cerritos rancho, consisting of some twenty-seven thousand acres, patented on December 27th, 1867, but which, I have heard, he bought of the Nieto heirs in the late thirties, building there the typical ranch-house, later the home of the Bixbys and still a feature of the neighborhood. Across the Cerritos Stockton's weary soldiers dragged their way; and there, or near by, Carrillo, by driving wild horses back and forth in confusion, and so creating a great noise and dust, tricked Stockton into thinking that there were many more of the mounted enemy than he had at first supposed. By 1853, Temple was estimated to be worth, in addition to his ranches, some twenty thousand dollars. In 1860, Los Cerritos supported perhaps four thousand cattle and great flocks of sheep; on a portion of the same ranch to-day, as I have remarked, Long Beach stands.

This is near the gravesite of John Ronald Temple, Plot Section K Lot 232 Grave 4, suggesting there may be a connection, but it does not seem close. He may be the grandson of John Ronald and Florence (Curry) Temple, also buried int he same cemetery.

Jonathan I. (John) TEMPLE was born on 14 December 1846 in NC.6362,55238,55239,55240,55241,55242 Gave TN in 1870.Gave his age as 35 in 1880. He lived in Hardeman Co., TN in 1869.55245 In August 1870 he was a farmer in Madison Co., TN.55241 In June 1880 Jonathan was a farmer in Madison Co., TN.55239 In June 1900 he was a farmer in Gibson Co., TN.55238 He was the census enumerator for his section. In April 1910 he was a retail merchant in Mason Hall, Obion, TN.55240 Jonathan died on 1 July 1922 at the age of 75 in Gibson Co., TN.55242,108427 Find-A-Grave gave the place as Mason Hall, Obion, TN, but this may be because that is where he was buried in Mason Hall Cemetery. He has reference number RLT # (None).12103 Different readers give his middle initial as I or Q. His grave marker has a Q, and gave his first name only as John, which agrees with his marriage license, which also gives his surname as Temples. His parents were both from NC. There are very few candidates that fit these criteria, and so it seems probable that he was the son of Armwell and Frances Temple of Pasquotank Co., NC. However, some secondary sources give his name as John G., which widens the aperture a bit. He might therefore be John O. Temples, son of Joab and Elizabeth Temples of Chatham Co., NC, known through much of the Civil War. This last person was the third cousin once removed of Wyatt Temple. The sum of the evidence points to his being closely related, but in an unknown way, to the family of Wyatt and Rebecca Temple. It may be that he is the son of Thomas and Lucy Temple who appear in Davidson County, TN in 1850.

In the 2005 obituary of their grandson John William Temple, the obituary referred to four uncles who predeceased him.

Although he seems pretty clearly to be the brother of Walter T. Temple(s), based on timing, location and proximity, this requires proof. Since neither seems to have appeared in the 1900 or 1910 censuses, their parentage is uncertain and they may be cousins. Parents: TEMPLE-88296 and UNKNOWN-88297.
