A Distressing Affair

The first fatal accident since the electric railway has been in existence occurred yesterday. The victim was Martha, the six-year-old dauaghter of William H. and Sophie Temple of North Catherine Street.

The accident occurred on West Coal Street just before the afternoon parade started and created considerable excitement because a report was started that the motorman of the car had run over the child while running through a crowd of people who were awaiting the start of the parade. The excitement was increased by another report that the car was run at a high speed.

The facts of the case are not in accordance with either report. Edward W. Amour was running the car. He has the reputation of being one of the most careful men on the line. As he went down Coal Street, he kept the car under control at slow speed. As he neared Coal Street, he was obliged to check even this speed to order a boy off the track. He went on a few yards, and Martha Temple ran across the northside of Coal Street. As she reached the railroad tracks, she turned directly towards the car. It was evidently her intention to turn around and run back to the children who had been running after her. There was a jar, and Amour brought the car to a stop. The child was taken from under the car and carried into a neighboring house. She expired in a few moments. The body was not cut or mangled. It was a death by squeezing.

Amour got on his car again and upon arriving at the power house surrendered himself to Richard Amour, the special officer of the company. General Manager Yarnell was then consulted at Ashland, and the motorman was advised to turn himself to the deputy coroner of this town. This was done. Mr. Brennan told Mr. Amour that he would hold him in his own recognizance for appearance at the inquest Tuesday evening.

The funeral of the victim will take place tomorrow at 2 o'clock. The remains will be interred in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Temple have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement, and no one sympathizes with them more than Mr. Amour who has a large family and says he can fully appreciate the force of the blow. Not unheard of, but not necessarily correct, either. I believe that the Martha A. Temple who was b 1846 (in the 1850 census) and got married in 1882 according to Harrison Co., IN records, was the same person, and the person she married was Routh. However, that would mean the children born to Sarah Penn were included in Martha's number of surviving children in 1900 - there were indeed five children enumerated with her in 1900. Martha A. TEMPLE¹¹³⁹⁹¹ was born in 1896. She died in 1955 at the age of 59 in Hannibal, Marion, MO. Buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hannibal, Marion, MO. Temple may not be her maiden name.
