The 1790 census indicates 2 males over 16, 4 between 0 and 16, and 2 females. Given his age in 1790, these might be Benjamin's son and grandchildren. Benjamin TEMPLE18465 was born on 11 March 1790 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg, SC.8996,43212,83846 The 1850 census gives TN as his birthplace. Thje History of Jackson Parish, LA, says it was in Copiah Co., KY. He served in the military in 1812.83846,83847 He was on the rolls of LA pensioners from the War of 1812 in 1883. Certificate 16,269 was issued for him in Apr 1872. He apparently had acute hearing, and could tell the notes of a fife a quarter mile away, and apparently that was important in his wartime role. His fife descended through the family, and as of 1982, was in the hands of Johnnie T. Walsworth, Jr. of Jonesboro, LA. He appeared in the census in 1841 in Copiah Co., MS.83848 Enumerated with 2 males and 6 females. In September 1850 Benjamin was a farmer in Franklin Co., MS.43215 He appeared in the census in July 1870 in Meadville, Franklin, MS.8992 Enumerated living with his son Benjamin. He lived in Vernon, Jackson, LA in 1883.83847 He died on 4 February 1886 at the age of 95 in Boatner, Jackson, LA.8404,83846,83850 The History of Jackson Parish, LA, syas he died at the home of his son, F.F. Temple, Sr. in Boatner, Jackson Parish, LA, but other sources put the place as Winnfield, LA. As no F.F. Temple is known among his children, it was not possible to determine which of his children were meant, but it was perhaps his son Benjamin Franklin Temple. It ws through that son that the connection to the Walsworth family was made, and the way in which his fife descended in that line. Buried in Transport Cemetery, Dodson, LA. Benjamin has reference number RLT # W59.26263 Appears with the terminal S in the 1841 state census only. His children are a curious lot - there seem to be two distinctly different waves of children, raising questions about who were the parents of the three who appeared with Benjamin and Amy in 1850. I am suspicious that there were two marriages here, and that the last three children are from a second wife, whose name was Amy, but the first children were either the children of an Elizabeth, or an unknown first wife. This may account for the daughter named Martha who was 15 in 1850, and still 15 in 1860. Parents: Jesse TEMPLE-16098 and RUSH-24358.

Virginia, Richmond, August 25th 1865
To His Excellency
Andrew Johnson
President of the U.S.

The petition of Benjamin Temple represents - That he is in his sixty fifth year of age. He was born in King William County in the State of Va and has always resided in Virginia. He resides at present in Mecklenberg County, Va.
In his early life he was a lawyer. He has not practiced law for many years. Since he ceased to practice law his occupation has been that of a farmer.
He has never held an office or position, civil, political or military, under the So-Called Confederate States government or any other government.
He has never borne arms against the United States government.
He was opposed to the secession and voted for the Union candidates for the Convention in Va, but acquiesced reluctantly in the action of his State when the ordinance of secession was passed, believing then, as he believes now that secession was no remedy for grievances real or imaginary.
He is not within any of the exceptions of the amnesty proclamation of the President of the United States of the 29th of May 1865 unless it be the 13th exception, and only within that because the estimated taxable value of his property may somewhat exceed twenty thousand dollars.
He has taken the prescribed oaths, under the proclamations of the President of the United States, in good faith, with the fixed and steady purpose of mind to keep and observe the same and to remain, as he is now, a peaceable and loyal citizen, and as far as he can be, a useful one.
No proceedings have been instituted against his property under the Confiscation acts. No property belonging to him is now in possession of the United States authorities as abandoned property or otherwise.
He respectfully asks that pardon which the Executive of the U.S. has, in clemency, so generously extended to others.

Benjamin TEMPLE was born in 1807 in PA.40974 In October 1850 he was a laborer in Birmingham Meeting, Chester, PA.40974 He has reference number RLT # (None).946 Age given in 1860 was 45, but for no apparent reason, there was a "12" written above his age.

Find-A-Grave says his name was Benjamin, but is lacking proof. Temples in the Census shows three Benjamin Temples in PA in 1840 - all are later accounted for, none have a birth date reasonably comparable to Catherine, and none were married to a Catherine. In 1830, only two of them were heads of household, One was potentially of the right age, in Peters Twp., Washington Co., PA, but he was alone as head of household. The other was one of the three Benjamins found in 1840. Of course, he may have been someone other than PA, but it seems just as likely that the idea he was a Benjamin is wrong.
