However, all other facts about John D are incompatible with John Phillip, and they must be different people. However, there was one John, b 1847 according to the 1850 census, who might be the right one. He was the son of William and Mary Temple of Petersburg, PA. That family seems to have largely disappeared between 1850 and when some of its members reappeared in 1870.
