In 1870, his wife was Martha, but his children do not line up for him as well as they do for his brother James. Much work needs to be done to clarify the families of John and his brother James.

CA death records gave the date as 20 Sep, but his widow Zora said it was 7 Sep 1920 in his veteran's headstone application. He served in the military between 1937 and 1946.^{1006,7566,129861,129862,129863} He enlisted twice, for unknown reasons. First, as Johnnie Temples, he enlisted on 8 Aug 1940 at Fort Benning, GA, as a private assigned to the Panama Canal Department, where he served with Company B, 84th Armed Medium Battalion. He claimed residence in Muscogee Co., GA. Service # 14012493. It was under this name and service # that his widow, Zora Adell Temples, applied for his veteran's headstone fur burial in Wheatland, CA.

Then, as John W. Temple, he enlisted on 11 Aug 1940 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, GA, as a private in the Coast Artillery Corps or Army Mine Planter Service, for the Panama Canal Department. He claimed residence in Polk Co., GA. Discharged 12 Oct 1943. Service # 14006873. Pension # 355 41 57.

In Feb 1945, medical records indicate he had served between 5 and 10 years, putting his enlistment as early as 1935 and late as 1940, but that needs to be tempered by his being only 15 in 1935. So, his enlistment date, at its earliest was about 1936 or 1937, as shown. When he enlisted, he was in AL, FL, GA, MS, NC, SC, or TN. He served in the field artillery. He was admitted to treatment at the Fort Sill, OK, station hospital for acute nasopharygitis in Feb 1945. Treated and released back to duty in Feb 1945. Service # 14006873. He lived in Polk Co., GA in 1940.¹⁰⁰⁶ John died on 2 May 1961 at the age of 40 in Colusa, Colusa, CA.^148,7566 Buried in Wheatland Cemetery, Wheatland, CA. Given with and without the terminal S in his military records - his original enlistment was as a Temples, but he later went by Temple. His widow, Zora Adell, went by Temple when she filled out the application for his veteran's headstone, but that application noted his military records were in the name of Temples. His having enlisted twice, once under each surname, didn't help keep things straight.

There are a large number of John W. Temples of comparable age, but none were found with his age and a source state of AL, FL, GA, MS, NC, SC, or TN. If he enlisted underage, he may have run away from home, so the enlistment state may not be his actual home state.

This family is composed from birth records; two children (Joseph and Jo Ann) were credited to Joseph Henry Temple; the third, Judy, was credited to Allison Chalmers Temple. Based on the middle name of the first of these, Joseph Chalmers Temple, I have interpreted Allison Chalmers Temple as the mother of these children. There are problems with this interpretation. First, I find no record of their marriage, and the only Allison Temple I can find is a black male b 1885. Also, the obituary of Marion Eve (Lunsford) Temple says she was the wife of Joseph H.
