Needham (Neadem) TEMPLE(S)13678 was born in 1783 in Cumberland Co., NC.40310,129947,129948 Gave his age in 1860 as 63. He appeared in the census in 1840 in Davidson Co., NC.40313 Gave his age as 40-50, and although he was clearly nearer the upper end of that bracket, he had to be older than that. In August 1850 he was a farmer in Davidson Co., NC.123450 Name given without the terminal S. Gave his age as 51, but that would have meant he was 4 when his first child was born. Enumerated with Sophia and Barbara, his children through Mary Speck. Also, enumerated next to two farms of the Hanes family, those of Marcus and Catherine, through whom he probably met Susannah. In July 1860 Needham was a farmer in Lexington, Davidson, NC.40310 In September 1870 he was a farmer in Yadkin, Davidson, NC.40311 Yadkin was part of Davidson county at the time of this enumeration. Gave his age as 81, putting his birth date as 1789, the earliest date he ever gave in a census. He died in 1875 at the age of 92 in Davidson Co., NC.129948 Buried in Good Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, Reedy Creek, NC. Needham has reference number RLT # N2.26263 Appears with the terminal S in his marriage to Susannah (Hanes) Pickle. His grave marker gives his name as Neadem. Also, Delores Temple Gandy found reference to an earlier date for marriage, 17 Feb 1816, but the marriage did not take place then for some unknown reason. The marriage in 1817 appears in the Rowan county records in reel 22, p. 2668, and the 1816 marriage is in the same reference in reel 22, p. 2669.

Marriages of Rowan County also mistakenly spells his name as Edom Temples, but also spelled his given name as Nedom. Children were: John Banes TEMPLE(S)-23194, William TEMPLE(S)-23195, Josiah TEMPLE-9789.

Private Needham H. TEMPLE(S) was born in 1837 in MS.4487 In October 1860 he was a farmer in Ellisville, Jones, MS.25019 He served in the military in 1861/2 in MS.7866,129889,129949,129950 Needham enlisted at Shubuta, serving in Company E in the 37th MS (known as the Shubuta Guards, raised in Clarke Co., MS) with his probable brothers James and Lorenzo J. The unit was organized in Apr 1862 and rendezvoused at Columbus MS. Some records indicate he jopined 8 Mar 1862. He was present for duty in Mar-Aug 1862, and died in an unnamed hospital in Oct 1862, after having been ill since September.

He had been wounded, but sources do not make it clear just when. There are two possibilities, depending on how long it took him to die. The first was that he was part of hte attack at Corith, MS, 3-5 Oct 1862. They suffered 19 killed and 62 wounded. this is the most likely battle in which he was wounded. If he died of sepsis or gangrene, he may have taken longer to die, and thus may have been part of the action off the Jacinto Road outside Corinth, MS, on 19 Sep 1862. A fierce battle was fought with General Rosecrans' forces, leaving 5 killed and 27 wounded.

So, the likelihood is that he died near Corinth, MS, probably in the hospital at Lauderdale Springs, but as to his burial, no records seem to exist. Needham died on 20 October 1862 at the age of 25 in Lauderdale Springs, Lauderdale, MS.129949,129950 The death place is based on the location of the 37th MS in Sep-Oct 1862. The hospital was in Lauderdale Springs, although his wounds were from a battle at Corinth, MS. He has a cenotaph in Sharon Cemetery, Sharon, MS. He has reference number RLT # U2978.62050 I associate Needham with this family because of their proximity in the 1860 census, and the death date that is probable for Lydia corresponds closely with the birth date of Needham. I am tempted to believe she died in childbirth or complications therefrom. This all requires proof, however.

Some research associates Almedia Temple, wife of William Johnson, with this family, but that is not consistent with the census records. It may be that they could not care for Almeda and she lived with relatives, but that is unproven. Parents: William L. TEMPLE(S) Sr.-20734 and Lydia Virginia (Jinny or Ginny) -28148.

Spouse: Ida May BISHOP-49771. Ida May BISHOP and Ollie TEMPLE(S) were married on 22 December 1917 in Louisville, Jefferson, KY.14217,14221 The circumstances here are really odd. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses, she was unquestionably Ida May, b 1903. However, Ollie Temple married Mary E. Bishop, b 1891, on 22 Dec 1917 in Jefferson Co., KY. Marriage records properly record his parents as Robert K. and Myrtle Wofford (sic) Temple. But, Ollie's wife's parents were G.G. and Catherine (Stephens) Temple. Mary Bishop did not appear in 1910 with parents as listed in the marriage certificate. There seems no clear way to resolve these conflicts, unless there was some serious errors introduced by the recording clerk, which seems unlikely.
