The confusion in the death dates indicates they are not the same person. The records of Kimrey Cemetery, Sugar Grove, IA, indicate John was buried in the Soldier's Cemetery near Rome. He seems to be Private John Temple, but the latter was buried in Chattanooga, TN. Parents: John TEMPLE-30034 and UNKNOWN-60192.
