Samuel TEMPLE37429,37430 was born in 1727 in Westford, Middlesex, MA.23,37429 He moved before 1751 in Bedford, Middlesex, MA. He land purchaser between 1754 and 1756 in Pepperell, Middlesex, MA.37430 He bought land in 1754 and 1756, which he later sold on 6 Dec 1758. Samuel purchaser of land on 18 December 1758 in Acton, Middlesex, MA.37430 Research by Sally Eaton reports "He bought thirty acres of farmland and orchards in Acton, Massachusetts, on 18 December 1758. A 1761 inventory taken after Samuel's death includes orchards, several "barrals of cyder," and notes that Gershom Davis and Amos Russell owed him money for "cyder" - an indication that Samuel made and sold cider." He died in 1760/1 at the age of 34 in Acton, Middlesex, MA.37429,37430 He was intestate. Hannah was appointed administratrix of the estate on 26 Jan 1761. His parents are believed to be Joseph and Abigail (Stearns) Temple. They had a Samuel, and the one presented here is generally accepted as that son.

Some sources show he had 4 children, but that was incorrect. Levi Temple first assigned him to Samuel and Hannah (Gleason) Temple, but was in doubt about his birth year, and did not know when Samuel and Hannah were married. We now have the date of marriage, some two years after the estimated birth date that Levi gave. That creates a problem, and no solution is evident. The evidence appears to indicate Elisha was a farmer (so say Albert Temple and Danny Smith in their book) and that he died unmarried. However, no records seem to verify much of an existence for Elisha. He was apparently too old to be a head of household in 1790, and it is very unclear where he might have been staying in that year. While both Some Temple Pedigrees and Rise of the Temples give his death in 1822, this is almost certainly a confusion with another person. Therefore, I have included him here, in agreement with the two major Temple genealogies, but this is for lack of any other suitable place to assign him.

Sally K. Eaton has pointed out that the conclusions of the two Temple genealogies are disputable. His parents "lived in a time when personal affairs were publicly scrutinized, and people were taken to court for having intimate relations before marriage. We've found no such court record for Samuel and Hannah. Additionally, their marriage record shows that Samuel Temple was living in Bedford and Hannah Gleason was from Upton at the time they were married. It is not likely that a couple with a two-year-old child would be living separately. Moreover, while we can find documentation for three children born to Samuel and Hannah Temple, there is no birth record for Elisha. Our conclusion is that Elisha, son of Samuel and Jerusha Temple, was mistakenly included with the family of Samuel and Hannah Temple in the two Temple genealogies." The Elisha shown as the child of Samuel and Hannah was actually a confusion with the son of Samuel and Jerusha (Hager) Temple. Parents: Joseph TEMPLE-130 and Abigail STEARNS-437.

Samuel TEMPLE11205,39602 was born on 17 October 1752 in Acton, Middlesex, MA.11205,11497,23316,39602 Date confirmed in Pension Files. He the ward of Mark White in 1767 in MA.37430 Sally Eaton's research showed "that when a man died in the 1700's, his property went to his sons, not to his wife. Because children cannot manage their own financial affairs, a financial guardian is appointed for them, or if they are old enough they can choose their own guardian. This is done even when the mother is still living. If the guardians had been appointed because the mother was dead, they would have been appointed at the same time and a guardian would also have been appointed for Samuel and Ebenezer's sister, Phebe." This explains in part why Hannah Gleason was still living, yet her children all chose guardians after their father's death. Samuel TEMPLE24884 was born in 1762 in Mecklenburg Co., NC.80752 The 1850 census says he was born in VA. He served in the military in 1780.122394 Served as a seaman on the ship Liberty of the Virginia State Navy in the Revolution. Samuel has reference number RLT # W25.67112 Samuel Temple, the husband of Susannah Coppedge, is shown to be the father of Wyatt Temple in the Coppedge genealogy, based on records in Mecklenburg County. Wyatt is also shown to be the cousin of Jane Rowe Coppedge, who married Rev. David Wells, who was found living near Wyatt in central AR. The linkage to Wyatt is the key to tie together Elizabeth and Hartwell, who are shown to be related to Wyatt.

The problem is that we have not positively identified which Samuel Temple married Susannah Coppedge. Ralph Temple has provided the following analysis that casts doubt on the lineage for Samuel shown here. Ralph wrote:

"I now believe that Samuel Temple b. 1762 d. 1852 did not marry Susannah Coppedge on November 11, 1793 in Mecklenburg VA. Instead she married a different Samuel Temple b. 1770-1780 who d. before 1850 and was in Henderson Co. TN in both the 1830 & 1840 census.

"I do not think that Samuel Temple b. 1762 ever left Prince George Co. VA. as he appears in the 1810 through 1850 census there. His brothers are shown to have been born in Prince George Co. so I suspect he was also. I don't know who he married.

"The Samuel Temple b. 1770-1780 (derived from the 1830 & 1840 census) had children Elizabeth, Hartwell and Wyatt."

At one time, I had shown Samuel and Susannah Coppedge to be the parents of these three, and of Robert, Henry and Thomas as well. Parents: Samuel TEMPLE-9841 and DRURY-9844.

Samuel TEMPLE was born about 1775 in King and Queen Co., VA. He died on 16 February 1836 at the age of 61.122399 Assigned to Joseph and Mary Temple based on timing and location. Parents: Colonel Joseph TEMPLE-4448 and Mary (Molly) HILL-4519.

Samuel TEMPLE4849 was born about 1775 in VA. He appeared in the census in 1830 in Henderson Co., TN.122400 He on tax list in 1836 in Henderson Co., TN.122400 The tax list gave Samuel and his three sons. Samuel appeared in the census in 1840 in Henderson Co., TN.122400 He died before 1850 at the age of 75. He possibly the son of Joshua as shown here. Refer to notes for the analysis -- which needs proof!. Possibly the father or grandfather of Samuel W. Temple who married Mary England. Based on analysis of the relationship to the HAIR family, location and timing.

Presented here is an alternative identification, based on the following reasoning from the Pendergrass genealogy on the descent of Samuel Temple. The Pendergrass genealogy is wrong, but it gives enough clues about what would have to be right that I have made the linkage of Samuel, son of Joshua, to be Samuel, father of Elizabeth, Hartwell and Wyatt. But researchers beware! This linkage needs proof!

Susan Rae Hood was kind enough to share the Pendergrass paper on the descendants of Samuel Temple. I think I can clear up some of the confusion on this with some of my early analysis, but much more needs to be done. Pendergrass tracks Samuel Temple through the 1800, 1810, and 1830 censuses, and puts him as the father of Elizabeth b 1798 (marr McNeley), Hartwell b 1800 and Wyatt, b 1801 (both based on the census) and William S. b 1820. I believe that William S. was a nephew, and both Ralph Temple and I pointed out that Samuel had died in 1816, so he was (hopefully) not the parent of William S. Susan's data has allowed the following analysis.

"I know for sure Samuel d 1816 was not the father of Hartwell and Wyatt, but suspect he was the father of Elizabeth who married William McNeley (Mc Neely). Here's how that works, and how I think the timing goes:

"Pendergrass made two early and important mistakes:

"First, he assumed that Samuel Jr., who d 1816, simply was missing in the 1820 census and reappeared in the 1830 having moved to Henderson Co., TN. These are actually two different Samuels Temple.

"Second, he conflated two families because they were closely related, putting William S. Temple as the son of Samuel Jr., himself an incorrect amalgamation.

"What we know for certain, based on Pendergrass¹ research, is that a Samuel Temple appears in 1810 in Chatham Co., NC, with 4 males, including himself. His age was 45, which is consistent with the assumed birth date of Samuel Jr. who d 1816. That means the other three males were not Hartwell, Wyatt and William S. The children of Samuel Jr., d 1816 were Joab (b abt 1792), Samuel (dates unknown) and James (dates unknown). He had five daughters, but they did not all appear in the 1810 census. Two are missing, so they either had died or married by 1810. Pendergrass gives Samuel Jr.¹s wife as under 45, and her assumed age based on other clues is 1773, consistent with the 1810 dating. At least two of the daughters in the 1810 census were Nancy and Ruth. Marriage records securely date Ruth to 1804, and Nancy married in 1821. Of Sally, Abigail and Elizabeth, only one remained at home or alive in 1810, and it is not yet known which.

"At this point, I wanted to make an hypothesis of the lineage of Samuel. I am still not convinced of his fatherhood of William S., and apparently neither was Pendergrass, who indicates his doubt in the middle of p. 4. Pendergrass may have been on the right track when he listed those nearby in the 1850 census of Henderson county. It turns out that a Burwell (not Burrell) was born in 1735 in VA, son of Samuel Temple and Frances Young. Burwell¹s sons were Frederick, Herbert, and Burwell, Jr. Burwell Jr. was born 1772 in Sussex Co., VA. Burwell Jr. moved to Williamson County TN, before 1830.

"It turns out that Burwell Sr.¹s brother, Joshua, had a large family himself. I don¹t have a complete line, but his issue included Joshua Jr.; Lucy; Amy; Patsy; Mary; Emanuel; Elizabeth; and Samuel. I have had difficulty figuring out what happened to this Samuel. I had suspected he was either the father or grandfather of Samuel W. Temple who married Mary England. Samuel W. was born 1831 in VA. If I back off that possibility, and have Samuel W. descend through Burwell¹s line, which means that Samuel, pere Hartwell, Wyatt and Elizabeth, could be the son of Joshua. It all fits, and there aren¹t many competing candidates.

"I think that this is further likely, as several of Joshua¹s children married in NC. From above, we know that Joshua¹s brother Burwell had children that went to NC as well. TN was populated by the NC crowd by and large, so the migration path is also consistent.

"And finally, with my current assignment of William S. as the son of Benjamin and Martha Temple, William S. and Samuel Temple son of Joshua are second cousins, once removed.

"More of that shortly. On page 6 of Pendergrass, he talks about the will of Samuel Temple who d Chatham NC about Dec 1784. Among his children, you will find one Benjamin Temple. It was this Benjamin, it turns out, who was actually the father of William S. Temple, not his brother Samuel, as Pendergrass wanted it.

"Pendergrass¹ reasoning on Samuel is in the last para on page 6. He¹s logical, but he is referring to two related Samuel, because one of them died in 1816.

"On page 9, Pendergrass raises a point that I consider very important in solving this. He cites a marriage of Charles Temple and Charlotte Hunter. I have this marriage, as well as the father of Charles. A witness was Wyatt Temple. That means there had to be some close link between the family of Charles Temple and Wyatt¹s family, which needs to be proved. The reason this is important is that I can find no Charles Temple in the line from Samuel and Frances Temple through either Burwell or Joshua. To accept my hypothesis above, I would need to see proof that they were either cousins, siblings, or something close enough to demonstrate why Wyatt was a witness to Charles¹ wedding.

Analysis by Ralph Temple demonstrated that the husband of Susannah Coppedge, who was also shown to be the father of Elizabeth, Hartwell and Wyatt, had to be the only Samuel known to be in Henderson Co., TN in 1830 and 1840, when his children were there.

Samuel Temple, the husband of Susannah Coppedge, is shown to be the father of Wyatt Temple in the Coppedge genealogy, based on records in Mecklenburg County.

1770-1780 (derived from the 1830 & 1840 census) had children Elizabeth, Hartwell and Wyatt." This makes him the son of Joshua Temple.

At one time, I had shown Samuel and Susannah Coppedge to be the parents of these three, and of Robert, Henry and Thomas as well. Parents: Joshua TEMPLE-17160 and UNKNOWN-21530.

Samuel TEMPLE was born in 1809 in VT.4337 Gave 1809 and VT in 1850. In 1850 he was a farmer in Londonderry, Windham, VT.4337 He has reference number RLT # 246.33986 Identified in 1850 as Samuel E. Temple, husband of Louisa M. Curtis, there are significant differences making that identification questionable. Although there are some similarities, there are significant problems with the identification. I suspect that Albert Temple and Danny Smith mixed together two Samuel Temples. They give a Samuel who married both a Louisa and a Polly (their # 246, p. 43 in Rise of the Temples.). Whereas some of the children fit, most do not, and the years are wrong. I suspect that one Samuel Temple married Louisa and another married Polly Fairbanks.

Samuel TEMPLE22900 was born about 1817 in MA.457,44900 Gave 1817 in 1850, but Find-A-Grave says 1823. Some sources give his name as Solomon. Reason for the confusion is not apparent. If he was Solomon, he was likely Solomon W. Temple, (1817-1852) of Bernardston, MA.
He might be Samuel Kimball Temple, who moved to OH, and that would explain why Samuel was not further known in MA. Not found in 1850 in MA.
