He was baptized on 27 March 1726/7 in Boston, Suffolk, MA.124260 He died before April 1754 at the age of 31 in Jamaica Plain, Suffolk, MA.80205 It is not clear from the sources I have seen whether the island of Jamaica in the Bahamas is meant, or whether it is Jamaica in either NY or MA. Made will in Jamaica prior to 1754. Died before his father. Some sources indicate that there were two sons named Thomas - one born in Mar 1723, and the second, who was baptized in 1726. I am not convinced that Robert named two sons with the same name, nor that the birth of one precludes his being the same son as the one baptized in 1726. It was unusual for these folks to baptize so long after birth, but I think a simpler solution is that there was only one Thomas. In any case, since neither married or had issue, the question is academic. Parents: Captain Robert TEMPLE-4625 and Mehitable NELSON-4626.

Thomas TEMPLE1941,56715 was born about 1730 in Pasquotank Co., NC.56715 He lived in Pasquotank Co., NC in 1748.1941 He can be securely placed in Pasquotank Co., NC as early as 1748, and possibly before. He lived in Johnston Co., NC in September 1753.1941 Thomas Temple enters 150 acres in Johnston County on south side of Neuse River, upper side of Falling Creek and Reedy Branch includes his own improvements. Research by Ralph Berlyn Temple, who found this in N.C. Land Entries 1753-1756 by Dr. Pruitt. Thomas on taxpayer rolls in 1754 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1941 Research by Ralph Berlyn Temple found this in the New Bern Library "NC Taxpayers 1701-1786." He served in the military between 1755 and 1766 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1941 Appeared as a private in Colonel Robert Murdins Regiment in 1755. Appeared again in 1766 as a Sergeant in Captain Jarvis Jones Company, under Colonel Thomas Taylor. Probably a Loyalist, since there is no record of service for him in the Revolution. Ralph Berlyn Temple pointed out that he was in Carteret Co., NC from 1771-1791, and wondered whether he left Pasquotank Co. due to his unpopular siding with the British. Found by Ralph Berlyn Temple in the New Bern Library "Colonial Soldiers of the South 1732-1774." He bought 53 acres of land from James Mc Daniel on 5 March 1758 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1941 Thomas paid 20 pounds for 53 acres on the southwest side of the Pasquotank River, in an area called New Land, which is now outside Morgan's Corner on Highway 158. He buyer of land from Joseph Pritchard on 5 October 1762 in Morgans Corner, Pasquotank, NC.1941 For 50 pounds, bought 50 acres on the southwest side of the Pasquotank River. Ralph Berlyn Temple found this in Pasquotank County Courthouse, Book C, page 412. Berlyn found further that the land was patented to Joseph Pritchard in 1750. He noted that a 15 Apr 1718 deed of sale showed Benjamin Pritchard bought land previously owned by Robert Temple, which is a possible link between Thomas and Robert Temple. Thomas bought land from Samuel Brothers on 8 October 1765 in Morgans Corner, Pasquotank, NC.1941 Paid 60 pounds for 60 acres on the southwest side of the Pasquotank River in the New Land area. Land adjacent to Joseph Temple's. Found by Ralph Berlyn Temple in the Pasquotank County Courthouse, Book D/E, page 371. He on the tax list in 1767 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1941 He bought land from William Nichols on 12 January 1768 in Morgans Corner, Pasquotank, NC.1941 Adjacent to land owned by Isaac Sawyer. Thomas moved about 1770 in Carteret Co., NC.1941 After this date, he appears to have lived mainly in Carteret Co., NC. Before this time, he appears mainly in Pasquotank records, and after this time, mainly in Carteret Co. records. He first appeared in Carteret County records in 1771 when is mentioned as a taxpayer on a Carteret County tax list. He next appears on 15 October 1773 when he purchased a one acre lot in Beaufort. He is listed in the 1779 Carteret County tax records as owning six cattle and 75 pounds currency. The 1784 tax records indicate that he owned 56 acres of land on Bogue Sound which agrees with the acreage of the Mill Field plot. Thomas Temple obtained this land from Jonathan Hibbs on 4 February 1782. He buyer of land from Isaac Sawyer on 8 March 1770 in Morgans Corner, Pasquotank, NC.1941 Bought 41.5 acres for 50 pounds in the New Land area. (Book I, page 314.) (Jonathan was married to Elizabeth Oglesby, sister of Dorcas. The Hibbs reportedly came from Pasquotank County also and were good friends of the Temples.) Thomas appeared in the census between 1784 and 1787 in Pasquotank Co., NC.103221 Enumerated with 2 males 21-60, 2 either below 21 or above 60, and 4 females. Also enumerated were 4 blacks 12-50, and 3 blacks under 12 or over 50. He lived in Pasquotank Co., NC in 1790.1941 The 1790 census showed Thomas to have 3 males (2 over 16, 1 under 16) and 4 females - if he was the Thomas of Pasquotank Co., NC. The 1790 also showed a Thomas in Carteret Co., NC, who is probably the same Thomas, since he had 3 males over 16 and 4 females. Had 7 slaves in 1790. He died in 1791 at the age of 61 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1941 The will of Thomas of Pasquotank Co., NC, was probated 27 Nov 1791. The Thomas Temple listed in Carteret Co., NC, had to have died at about this time, since his sons Thomas and William inherited land shown in a deed dated 1 Nov 1793. The last public record of Thomas appeared 17 May 1791 in Carteret Co., NC. Thomas buyer of some land in May 1791 in Carteret Co., NC.1941 16 May 1791: Ananias Nelson of Carteret County for the sum of eighty pounds sold to Thomas Temple of Carteret County a parcel of land between Bogue Sound and Newport River containing 200 acres. Originally land patented by George Frize. (Book L, page 320.) He died in November 1791 at the age of 61 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1941,56715,66228 Rise of the Temples and Temple People, Vol, II give the will date as 25 Nov 1791, probated 12 Dec 1791. Research by Ralph Berlyn Temple gave the will of Thomas of Pasquotank Co., NC, probated 27 Nov 1791. The Thomas Temple listed in Carteret Co., NC, had to have died at about this time, since his sons Thomas and William inherited land shown in a deed dated 1 Nov 1793. The last public record of Thomas appeared 17 May 1791 in Carteret Co., NC. The will cited his sons James and Thomas, as well as Susannah Koen, Peggy Sawyer, Fanny Temple, and granddaughter Mary Stokely (who was the daughter of Elizabeth Temple and Joseph Stokely). He possibly one of the Temples in what is known as the Oglesby Legend in NC.1941 The Oglesby Legend is reported by Ralph Berlyn Temple as follows:

A Temple family reportedly lived on Bogue Sound in the early 1700s immediately east of the site of the present Gull Harbor development. This information has been passed down through generations of the Oglesby's, a prominent Bogue Sound family from the 1700s who married into the Temple family and later purchased this Temple land. The Oglesby's give us a legend of an Indian raid made on this Temple family early in the 18th century, which they believe occurred 1710-1720. (Note: This 1710-1720 date makes it unlikely that this incident occurred in Carteret County; probably occurred in Pasquotank County. Research to date indicates that the 1771 Thomas Temple is the earliest known Temple in Carteret County.)

"The legend of the Temple family living on Mill Field, later Levi T. Oglesby and Abigail Tolson property of Bogue Sound happened like this according to the story of the Oglesby's. The Temple family had a water mill on a small stream emptying into the sound known at that time as Betsy Field Creek. In old deeds it is referred to as a "gut" and lately it has been dredged and is part of the Gull Harbor development.

Mr. Temple was a sea-going man and was a pilot for one of the ships sailing between the West Indies and the Carolina coast. During his voyages he was absent for long periods of time.

It was during one of Mr. Temple's voyages to the West Indies that a band of Indians suddenly visited the Temple home on Bogue Sound. The Indians were said to be of the Chickasaw tribe. However, this may not be correct as it is doubtful Indians of this tribe were in that area. The Temples had three children. The oldest, a boy 10 years old, had climbed up an apple tree when the Indians came. They murdered the boy and seized the food the mother had cooked for dinner. They then began throwing the baby from one to another. Knowing her predicament with no neighbors near, she thought of a jug of rum that was stored in the mill. She ran to the mill, found the jug and started passing it from one Indian to another until they were all well intoxicated. She grabbed an ax where she had been cutting wood and proceeded to club the Indians one by one until they were all killed. The circumstances of the disposal of their dead bodies is not recalled but they were said to be buried east of the Betsy Field Creek." In a letter by Mrs. Polly Williamson, daughter of Colonel Benjamin Temple, to Dr. William Gwathmey of King County, VA, in 1831, she listed the ten children of Joseph Temple. Thomas was not listed, and was assigned to Joseph by Rise of the Temples. This is most likely an error, based on more comprehensive research by Ralph Berlyn Temple.

He appeared in the 1786 Pasquotank County Census of 1786 with four females, one of whom was his wife. Still had four females in 1790, so I cannot tell when two of them were born. Possibly the last two were born after 1786, but it could just as easily be true that the first two girls had moved out by 1786.

The lineage here is in doubt. Rise of the Temples gives Thomas as the son of Joseph Temple. However, more careful research indicates he was not. Research and conclusions by Ralph Berlyn Temple identify this Thomas as the son of Daniel Temple, of Pasquotank Co., NC. That research puts This Thomas in the Carteret Co., NC, records in 1773. His research, though, indicates Thomas was married to Lurany McDaniel, daughter of James McDaniel (according to James McDaniel's 1780 will). that same Thomas, apparently, married a Susannah, since both are mentioned in a 1762 deed. With the difficulties of old records, it is possible that these facts apply to more than one Thomas (which correlates to the impossibly long lifespan of Thomas given in Rise of the Temples, who must be two Thomases).

He bought considerable land along the water in both Pasquotank and Carteret counties. The Temples of Carteret county were said to be seagoing folk, differentiating him from the inland Wake and Johnston county, NC,Temples.

Research by Ralph Berlyn Temple provided the following summary of transactions of Thomas:
"3 October 1748: "Minutes of the Executive Council (1735-1754) at New Bern". Warrants for 200 acres each to Thomas Temple and John Temple in Johnston County (which then included Wake). (Beaufort Library "The Colonial Records of NC".) (It is likely that this is the same Thomas from Pasquotank. Eunice's research indicates that other Temples in NC arrived later and were descended from the Prince George, VA Temples: Samuel Temple is Chatham County 1755; Henry Temple in Granville approximately 1760, then to Wake a few years later.) In 1754 Thomas added 80 acres to his patent on Neuse River and Falling Creek (near Goldsboro). John is later mentioned in records: on 22 February 1764 in Duplin County on Killswamp Branch, on 14 June 1784 in Wayne County on Falling Creek, and on 2 March 1790 in Wayne County on Falling Creek."

"5 January 1750: Thomas Temple witnessed sale of 52 ½ acres south of the Pasquotank River in the Dismal Swamp from John Cooper to Isaac Sawyer for 100 pounds. Proved April 1751 court by Thomas Temple. (Book B, page 163)."

"April 1751: A deed of sale for land from John Cooper to Isaac Sawyer was witnessed by Thomas Temple."

He is confused in Rise of the Temples with his son, Thomas. Although the birth date given in Rise of the Temples is before 1750 for the husband of Rhoda Burnham, the age range in the 1800 census of Pasquotank County is 1774-1784, and the range from the 1820 census is before 1775 -- which resolves to a range of 1774 to 1775, not before 1750. So Thomas, in Rise of the Temples, is a conflation of Thomas and his son, Thomas. Parents: Daniel TEMPLE-52753 and UNKNOWN-52754.

Spouse: Luraney (Fannie) MC DANIEL-4503. Luraney (Fannie) MC DANIEL and Thomas TEMPLE were married about 1750 in NC.1941,56715 Her marriage to Thomas Temple is mentioned in the will of her father, James McDaniel in 1780. Spouse: Susannah MC DANIEL-47642. Susannah MC DANIEL and Thomas TEMPLE were married before 1762 in NC.1941 Marriage is mentioned in a 1762 deed in Pasquotank Co., NC. It is remotely possible that Susannah and Luraney are the same woman, and that Luraney's name is a confusion for Susannah.

Some Temple Pedigrees gives one daughter, Sarah, but no further details. I find him the best candidate, of all his siblings, to be father of Thomas Temple, b 1767 in PA. However, there is a nearly equal likelihood that this Thomas' brother William was the father. Parents: Thomas TEMPLE-4482 and Mary Jane Chandler JEFFERIS-4483.

Thomas TEMPLE1941,52161,56241,124270,124271 was born about 1766 in Carteret Co., NC.1941,19197 The date given seems quite late for him to have served in the Southern Campaign of the Revolution. Also, records indicate his birth was in Carteret Co., NC. Rise of the Temples confuses him with another Thomas who was born in VA. He served in the military in 1781.1941 Served on the side of the British during the Southern Campaign, where he was wounded and lost the use of his arm. He also lost his home due to his loyalty to the British. He appeared on 24 Apr 1781 as a private during a muster of Captain Donald Cameron's Company, King's Rangers, at Augusta, GA. Credited with 61 days service, from 25 Apr to 24 Jun 1781. He enlisted on 5 Mar 1781. Found by Ralph Berlyn Temple in the New Bern Library "Loyalists in the Southern Campaign, Volume I, page 58. He appeared in the census in 1790 in Carteret Co., NC.28663 Appears with 3 males over 16, and four females (no ages given). Thomas appeared in the census in 1790 in Northampton Co., NC.19198 Enumerated as a male over 16. He appeared in the census in 1790 in Carteret Co., NC.1941 The 1790 Census listed the Thomas Temple household as the sole Temple family in Carteret (also Craven) County. The family consisted of three white males over 16 years old and four females. He received all his father's land except for the "Old Plantation" in 1791 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1941 Thomas involved in land transaction with his brother William in 1793 in Carteret Co., NC.1941 Deed dated 1 November 1793 revealed that William purchased the one-half share (28 acres) of Thomas' (son) for 50 pounds. This deed further stated that the land had been received by William and Thomas from "Thomas Temple, our father" . . . "by heirship", (deed also states that Thomas (father) received the land from Jonathan Hibbs and land patent was originally part of land patent for 100 acres dated 20 April 1741). The deed was signed by Thomas (son) and Nancy (wife) Temple, witnessed by Calos Longest and Thomas Bareat. He involved in land transaction in 1794 in Carteret Co., NC.1941 Deed dated 19 November 1794 indicates that William and Thomas (son) Temple sold a parcel of land received from father Thomas Temple to Ananias Nelson for $80.00. The parcel was described as 200 acres lying in Carteret County between Bogue Sound and Newport River on the side of __ Branch abutting Benjamin Oglesby's land. He bought 60 acres from his brother James on 18 August 1798 in Carteret Co., NC.1941 Thomas lived in Carteret Co., NC before 1800.1941 He appeared in the census in 1800 in Carteret Co., NC.28663 Eight years after marriage to Nancy, he is listed alone in the census. He appeared in the census in 1800 in Pasquotank Co., NC.19198 Enumerated as 16-26, placing his birth date as 1774-1784. He had one female 16-26 (Rhoda) and 1 female 0-10. Thomas moved in 1800 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1941 He appeared in the census in 1810 in Pasquotank Co., NC.19198 Enumerated as 26-45, giving a birth date range of 1765 to 1784, the same for Rhoda. Also with 2 males 16-26 and 1 female 10-16 and 2 0-10. He appeared in the census in 1820 in Pasquotank Co., NC.19198 Enumerated as a male over 45, giving a birth date before 1775, along with Rhoda as age 26-45, one male 0-10 and 1 female 10-16, and 2 females 0-10. Thomas died in 1833 at the age of 67 in Pasquotank Co., NC.19197,19198 Will dated 27 Oct 1833 was probated in the December term of 1833. I have no evidence for the existence of this Thomas, beyond the severe problems created by the dating forced by Rise of the Temples for the Thomas that married Nancy in Pasquotank County. The censuses resolve the latter Thomas to a birth date in the 1784-1794 timeframe, whereas Rise of the Temples gives him a birth date of 1760. He would then have had to be well into his 60s before having his children. Furthermore, Rise of the Temples is demonstrably wrong on forcing Almon Temple to be the same person as Almon S. Temple. Again, Almon appears to be best suited as the son of this unrecognized Thomas, and a contemporary of the Thomas that married Nancy. That also fits the naming convention for Almon S. Temple as the son of Thomas and Nancy, in honor of Thomas' brother.

Thomas TEMPLE44269,124272 was born in 1767.397 He died about 1854 at the age of 87.397 Formerly, I had reported his name to be John, based on information supplied by Joyce Hagerty, who cites a letter from Eden Booth describing his lineage, among the Chester Co., Papers of Cope and Furthey. However, as often happens with tough lineages like this, new information comes to light to overturn the past. In correspondence from Joyce on 7 Oct 2002, she cites further information from Eden Booth in a 1967 letter, wherein Thomas Temple was given as the father not only of Thomas, Joseph, John, Richard and James, but of the other children now listed. As to Thomas' own ancestry, his common name and availability of alternatives without known documentation have led to his being a pretty solid brick wall.

Spouse: Ann -39884. Ann and Thomas TEMPLE were married about 1791. Children were: Mary TEMPLE-39885, Thomas TEMPLE-21664, Joseph E. TEMPLE-21665, Mary TEMPLE-39886, John TEMPLE-21389, Richard TEMPLE-21666, James TEMPLE-21667.

Thomas TEMPLE was born on 9 September 1770 in Concord, Middlesex, MA.116792,124273 He appeared in the census in 1820 in Middlesex Co., MA.7152 He appears with 4 children. This means that one of those shown either had died (possibly Love) or has been erroneously added to this family. He moved about 1825 in Billerica, Middlesex, MA.124274 Thomas moved about 1840 in New Ipswich, Hillsborough, NH.124274 Linda Wade believes they moved to the New Ipswich area, and that this was the area Sarah Wright was from. He died on 4 February 1850 at the age of 79 in Hillsborough, Hillsborough, NH.23,124275 Died of old age. Buried in Village Cemetery, Peterborough, NH. Albert Temple, in Rise of the Temples, conflated this Thomas with another Thomas, b 1772. Both Thomases, it seems, married women named Sarah Wright, and this has reinforced the confusion. The problem is that we have no proof of the ancestry of Thomas 1772, but we also cannot find any factual evidence that these two men were the same person. Ethel Temple Jensen, a descendant of Thomas 1772, has worked to establish his lineage, but with no provable results. In earlier versions of this database, I committed the same error as Albert Temple, and kept these two together. Ethel has convinced me that this is at best only a tentative conclusion, and until it is proven, we will keep these Thomases and their families separate. Parents: Peter TEMPLE-852 and Lois DARBY-927.

Spouse: Sarah WRIGHT-28249. Sarah WRIGHT and Thomas TEMPLE were married on 30 September 1802 in New Ipswich, Hillsborough, NH.8300,114528,124273,124276,124277 Official records disagree, with some giving 12 Jun, others 30 Sep. The 1905-1906 transcription of original NH marriage and divorce records gave the date as 30 Sep. Children were: Sarah TEMPLE-6472, Thomas Wright TEMPLE-1137, Mary Ann TEMPLE-1139, Lucy (Love, Lovey) TEMPLE-1140, Charles TEMPLE-23484.

Thomas TEMPLE17197,124273 was born on 20 April 1772 in PA.17196,17197,27185,124273,124278,124279 Edmund Rice Genealogy gives 9 Sep 1770 and Concord, MA. However, this appears to be a confusion of Thomases. Also, his gravestone indicates he "Died August 9, 1845, age 73 yrs., 3 mos., 20 days." The grave marker thus yields a birth date of 20 Apr 1772, but this is likely to be an error as it is to be correct, as the family did not know much about him. His birthplace was given by his son Lewis in the 1880 census as NY, but his other children gave, variously VA, MD, OH and NJ. The assertion of his origin in PA is based only on his son Joseph's claim in 1850, and is at best a possibly inaccurate and as yet unprovable assertion. He moved before 1828 in Norwich Twp., Franklin, OH.17197 He moved in 1834/5 in Jackson Twp., Richwood, Union, OH.17197,124280 Purchased land in Union County on 18 Feb 1840. Thomas died on 9 August 1845 at the age of 73 in Richwood, Union, OH.9358,9387 Buried in Temple family plot on the land he purchased in Union Co., OH in 1840. The primary genealogist on this line is Ethel Temple Jensen. In her book, Temple/McNulty Genealogy, she made clear that the relationship of Thomas to his ancestors is yet to be proven. Furthermore, it was her belief that Thomas' parents were in Pennsylvania, and that Thomas went to Ohio by way of Virginia. The earliest documented fact she had on Thomas was his purchase of a plot of land on 11 Jul 1829 in Norwich Township, Franklin, Ohio.

Not all children reported here reflect Mrs. Jensen's research. At least two other books have given pieces of this descent. However, caution needs to be used in this family. Linda Wade and her mother, Ethel Temple Jensen, did considerable research on this family, Linda explained that the OH Temples did not know much of their descent, and particularly where Thomas and his family came from. In his son's 1912 obituary of Lewis, he stated that Joseph was Lewis' father, rather than an elder half brother. This was probably due to Joseph's role in the family, being 26 years older than Lewis, where he was probably more of a father figure than Thomas, especially after Lewis' teenage years.

There seems to be a PA connection for the family. Ethel Temple Jensen's "Temple/McNulty Genealogy" said they were in PA, and that "it is possible Thomas may have arrived in Ohio having travelled through VA." The PA connection came from Joseph, in his 1850 census report, and he says his father was from PA. However, these claims are at best unreliable and unproven assertions. While there is nothing to prove he was not (nor is there a birth record to prove that he was), PA is an as yet unproved assertion.

Linda K. Wade and Ethel Temple Jensen are looking into a couple of possibilities for Thomas' origin. Linda Wade reported that "he was a grandson of the Thomas that came from Coombs Lane (b. 1694). However, (Ethel Jenson)'s intuition tells her that I should go back to VA and research there. It was James Temple, Thomas and Jane's eldest son who said his father was born in VA. I believe that James was fairly closely connected to his parents."

Thomas TEMPLE was born about 1780. He lived in IN between 1846 and 1852.53594 Thomas' existence is from a biography of John Franklin Temple, the son of Needham and Polly (Speck) Temple. Needham had to be the brother of Thomas, because that article mentions that John F. and his brother Isaiah left home in 1846 and traveled to southern Indiana where their uncle Thomas Temple lived. John was bonded to Thomas until his 21st birthday, or until about 1852. Parents: Needham TEMPLE-34754 and UNKNOWN-57963.

Thomas TEMPLE124271,124283 was born between 1784 and 1794 in NC.124283 Date range resolved from the 1810-1820 censuses. He appeared in the census in 1810 in Pasquotank Co., NC.124283 Enumerated as having 2 males 16-26 and 1 26-45, and 2 females 0-10, 2 females 10-16, and 1 female 16-26. I think the elder male is the father of Thomas or his wife. He appeared in the census in 1820 in Pasquotank Co., NC.124283 Enumerated with 1 male 26-45, and 2 males 0-10, 1 female 26-45 and 2 females 10-16. Thomas died about 1840 at the age of 56. Assumed because he is absent in the 1850 and subsequent censuses. He appeared in the census in 1840 in Pasquotank Co., NC.124283 Possibly enumerated twice, on page 308 and again on 317. On page 308, he is enumerated with 1 male 30-40, 1 male 5-10, and 2 0-5, and 1 female 30-40 and 1 15-20. I believe this needs checking, since the age ranges are out of line with the Thomas appearing in the 1810 and 1820 censuses. Rise of the Temples creates a major problem in this line. The census records resolve the age of Thomas, husband of Nancy, to be in the 1784-1794 range. However, Rise of the Temples, # 79D, p. 23, gives 1760. I think there is a generation problem here. Thomas 1760 may have had a son Thomas with whom he has become confused, and that Thomas is the one identified as the husband of Nancy. Parents: Thomas TEMPLE-4522 and UNKNOWN-47655.

Thomas TEMPLE79857 was born in 1787 in Shrewsbury, Worcester, MA.23,5254 An independet researcher of usually high reliability gave a date of 21 Dec 1769 in Shrewsbury, MA, but if the order of the children in his father's will is time-ordered, his birth year was more like 1787. Of the eight children listed in that will, 7 are in known time order, so it seems Thomas was in fact b ca 1787. He moved about 1820 in Utica, Oneida, NY.11078 In October 1850 he was a cabinet maker in Attica, Wyoming, NY.5254 Thomas has reference number RLT # (None).27457 He died.
