Marriage and death records of MI are quite clear that Caroline married Edward R. Rioss on 26 Nov 1871 in a dual ceremony with her sister Catherine. However, these records are equally clear that the same Catherine married Ransom Dean, and began having children with him in 1872. In 1900, Caroline claimed to have had 6 children, all of whom survived, and the first of these was born in 1872. The marriage to Rioss, which is proven, must have been quickly annulled or ended very abruptly shortly after the Nov 1871 ceremony, as all her later claims for marriage to Ransom Dean indicate she married him before the end of 1871.

Edward Rioss was not found in 1880, though a person very similar to him in most respects was enumerated with a wife named Carried. His name, though, was Edward Ray, and they were in Coldwater, MI.
