It is a letter dated December 24th 1857, King William County VA. There is no envelope so no proper names or addresses (did they use envelopes in those days?) other than it is from a father to his son "Tommy" in Illinois. The writer talks about having delayed writing until he can no longer put it off. He implies that the boy is staying with a Mr. and Mrs. Davidson or possibly Dawson and he must be a good boy to them. The father says that since his arrival the people in Virginia have not judged him, unlike some where the boy is, and forgives them. He asks the boy to write him in Richmond."
