While about 1854 is as well as can be accomplished right now, until better evidence is found, It may be the James Harriott Temple was the last child of Margaret and Robert. That is why Anna's children start with Albert H. Temple. Parents: Robert T. TEMPLE-42314 and Margaret -52123.

Interestingly, a listing of Stafford County Marriages supplied by Phyllis Farmer <hfarmer@ccpl.carr.lib.md.us> included Thomas Heflin marrying S.A. Heflin, ae 31 and 21 respectively, both of Stafford, on 6 Oct 1883 in Stafford. Since the records of the marriage in Fredericksburg included a minister's return, we know that marriage took place. But is it possible that either J.H. TEMPLE died soon after marriage, or that the couple's marriage was somehow ended abruptly? The other alternative, that the S.A. Heflin in the Stafford records is not Susie Alice is also possible, of course. Children were: Florence Virginia TEMPLE-47819, Ethel Irene TEMPLE-47820, Mildred E. TEMPLE-47821.

James Harvey (James) TEMPLE14668,104204 was born on 7 November 1810 in King William Co., VA.6886,86333,95373,101403 In his marriage to Henrietta in 1860, he claimed 1812. He moved before 1838 in IL. He was Baptist in 1838 in Chillicothe, Peoria, IL.104205 James and his wife were two of the original seven founding members of the Baptist Church of Chillicothe in the spring of 1838. James was also the person who began the Sunday School there in 1838. James appeared in the census in 1840 in Essex Co., VA.5689 Enumerated with 1 male 30-40 (himself), 1 15-20, 2 males 10-15; 1 female 30-40, 2 10-15, 2 5-10, and 2 0-5. At least one of the children must have been Frances' by her first marriage. In September 1850 he was a merchant in Peoria Co., IL.95373 He moved about 1857 in VA.36827 James moved on or about the time of his wife Frances' death. He had done something which caused him to leave IL and go back to VA.

Pete Temple, <pndtemple@roadrunner.com>, provided "an additional document which was in my Paternal Grandmother's papers which I scanned in 2006 and didn't understand its possible significance at the time. It is a letter dated December 24th 1857, King William County VA. There is no envelope so no proper names or addresses (did they use envelopes in those days?) other than it is from a father to his son "Tommy" in Illinois. The writer talks about having delayed writing until he can no longer put it off. He implies that the boy is staying with a Mr. and Mrs. Davidson or possibly Dawson and he must be a good boy to them. The father says that since his arrival the people in Virginia have not judged him, unlike some where the boy is, and forgives them. He asks the boy to write him in Richmond." Further research, with the aid of Grace Temple, revealed "information from the Peoria newspapers relating to James H Temple and a Dr. James Swans(z)ey being indicted in Chicago for manslaughter resulting from the death of Regent (sp?) Lawson following an abortion performed by Dr. Swansey in July 1857 in Chicago. The early August Chicago Tribune accounts of the purported actions of the two men are quite vivid. Obviously no libel laws in those days. I could not find any Tribune articles about the trial outcome other than a piece put in by Dr. Swansey in November stating that he had been fully acquitted and because 'James H. Temple by the nolle pros. entered upon the indictment against him was deprived of any public opportunity of exculpating himself and relieving himself of the very unjust and unfounded imputations,....He (Dr. Swansey) deemed it necessary to submit to the public the following sworn statement of the facts coming to my knowledge from the girl herself during recent relations with her care as a physician.' There follows a sworn statement attesting to James' actions as those of a concerned parent and in the best interests of the girl. Also that James was not the father of her child. She was apparently the 18 year old Renat Temple from Norway living in the Temple household in the 1850 census. The newspaper says she came to live with the Temples at the age of 2 following the death of her parents. She would have been about 25 at her death." James moved about 1861 in Chicago, Cook, IL.32480 He appeared in the census in July 1865 in Chillicothe, Peoria, IL.36827 He died in April 1870 at the age of 59 in Richmond City, VA.7720,58950,104206 Rise of the Temples estimated death in about 1895. Some research claims he died on the day of the census, 9 Jul 1870. This seems to be some confusion, since the 1870 Mortality Index says he died at age 59 in Apr 1870. That is his father's age, and is well before the census in 1870. The confusion is not with his father, since his father died well before that date. Also, the location was Richmond, VA, where he might have been visiting, but he was certainly not a resident. He died of paralysis, and was a dry goods merchant. He is linked with this family in the 1870 Mortality Index, which connected him to family number 1289, which was Henrietta and her children. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. James has reference number RLT # 100.8741 At one time, due to the late marriage of James Harvey to Henrietta, and an error which ascribed to James Harvey the same death date as his first wife, Frances, some research postulated a son, by Frances, b abt 1830, named James H. This latter person did not exist. Marriage records of James H. and Henrietta V. definitively show that Henrietta married this James, not any other. The marriage records give the ages and names of parents, and James Harvey Temple, b 1812 (in his marriage license) married Henrietta (Talbott) Millspaugh, b 1832. Parents: Reverend John (Jack) TEMPLE-4501 and Alice TAYLOR-5302.
