James M. TEMPLE (private).13974

Spouse: Katherine E. BIHARY-146844.

James M. B. TEMPLE103414 was born in 1802 in VA.44406,44407,103417 He appeared in the census in 1840 in Limestone Co., AL.44409,85842 Enumerated with one male 0-5 and 2 females 0-5. In 1850 he was a farmer in Limestone Co., AL.44410 In June 1860 James was a farmer in Shoal Ford Twp., Limestone, AL.44407 He appeared in the census in 1866 in Limestone Co., AL.104453 Enumerated with himself, one male between 20 and 30, and 2 between 10 and 20. Also with him was one female age 40 to 50 (I assume to be Martha), 1 between 10 and 20, and one between 20 and 30. He also claimed that his family had had 1 family member who was a soldier who was killed in the Civil War. The family also claimed one member classified as an idiot. He died before 1870 at the age of 68. James has reference number RLT # U3383.5252 May have had a sister or sister-in-law named Eliza (Lizer in the 1870 census) who was enumerated with Henry Allen Temple and his family in 1870.

The initial B. appears only in his marriage license.

In Temple People, Vol. II, Joyce Temple Barnett conjectured that James M.B. Temple might have been the son of James b 1790-1800 and a first wife, unnamed, but I do not think so. James M.B. Temple was born 1802-1805, based on what the latter reported to the census takers in 1850 through 1870. That would mean that James was as young as 2, and as old as 15 if he fathered James M.B. Furthermore, James does not appear as a son in the 1820 census, when he would have fallen in either the "10-16," "16-18" or "16-26 category. I consider it more likely that James was the same person as James M.B., because they never appear together in the same census. I have broken out the children based on an artificial gap in the ages of the children in the late 1830s. The break could just as readily be found after Nancy was mentioned in the deed in 1831, and before the birth of Mary in 1834.

His son Robert Henry's death certificate said his name was William Temple.

James Mathias (Matthew) TEMPLE22004 was born on 14 December 1841 in IN.7056,22005,22007,22008,104477 Gave his age as 36 in the 1880 census and 26 in 1870. Some sources gave Jun 1841. He appeared in the census in August 1850 in Blooming Grove, Franklin, IN.104478 Enumerated with the family of James and Charlotte Sherman, of no known relationship. I do not believe he is their child, however, as James was ae 60 and Charlotte was ae 55. They were also from MA. I think it is more likely that he is the son of Thomas and/or Nancy Temple, enumerated close by in 1850. He served in the military between 1861 and 1865.22005,104477 Served as a private in Company F, 16th Indiana Infantry from 7 May 1861 to 7 May 1862. He re-enlisted, apparently, in the 22nd Light Artillery Regiment on 15 Dec 1862, and finally mustered out 7 Jul 1865 in Indianapolis. Disabled from fever. In June 1870 James was a day laborer in Brookville, Franklin, IN.22008 In June 1880 he was a farmer in Williamson Co., TN.22007 He appeared in the census in 1890 in Franklin, Williamson, TN.22005 Enumerated in the Civil War census of 1890. He has reference number RLT # U4828.8741 Name may have been Anglicized, as it is given as Matthew in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. His parents were both from IN, except in 1900 when they were both from DE. He was enumerated with Janes and Charlotte Sherman in 1850, of no known relationship, but he was close to John and Ann (Sherwood) Temple. He does not fit into the latter's family, though, falling in between marriages.

He has been placed as the son of (Unknown) and Nancy Temple because they were in Blooming Grove at the same time, had children at the same time, and there are no other known alternatives. Matthew was either their son, or a nephew, so this association is tentative and requires proof.

Also given as James Mathias. Parents: TEMPLE-55733 and Nancy -55734.

His assignment to the family of John Earl and Bessie (Burnham) Temples is based on his claim that they were his parents when he applied for his SSAN and in his WWII draft registration and his inclusion in his father's obituary. Where he was in 1920 remains a bit of a mystery. Appears with the terminal S in his father's obituary. Parents: John Earl TEMPLE Sr.-48130 and Bessie BURNHAM-53373.
