Wrote that his mother died in his ninth year. Raised an Episcopalian, he became a Baptist in 1810, and later was pastor of Upper Essex Baptist Church in 1818. Disagreeing with doctrines, he became a member of the "Disciples of Christ" and wrote may religious articles. He is said to have been disinherited on becoming a Baptist.
