TEMPLES¹³²⁰⁷² was born in 1849 in NC.^{404,405,67720} He appeared in the census in October 1850 in Jacksonville, Duval, FL.⁶⁷⁷²⁰ In October 1870 he was a farm hand in Providence, Mecklenburg, NC.⁴⁰⁵ In June 1880 Stanhope was a farmer in Providence, Mecklenburg, NC.⁴⁰⁴ I have found from Cindie Ashley Gillis that the information in this family, drawn from Temple People, Vol. II, is very much in error. The children shown are actually step-children. Cindie pointed out that Andrew was actually Andrew Littleton Ashley, and this raises a question in my mind about a family closeness or relationship with the line of Littleton W. Temple.

Separately, however, is the evidence from the 1880 census that puts Stanhope as the son of Joseph and Mary. He is given as the grandson of Ann Temples, and she is clearly the widow of John Temples of Mecklenburg County, NC. Although no wife or children of Stanhope appear, he is also enumerated with Emeline Boyd, who is his aunt, and a cousin named Mary, ae 11. Mary is the daughter of Stanhope's uncle John R. and his wife Mary. That means that the only people left to be the parents of Stanhope are Joseph and Mary. Mary Drury, though, is enumerated as his sister-in-law, which would make him the son of John R. and Mary E. Temples. The problem with this association is that he does not appear with them as their child in 1850, the year after his birth, because john and Mary were apparently not married. So - he cannot be simultaneously a brother of Emeline Boyd and a brother-in-law of Mary Drury and a grandson of Ann. He could be a son of Ann's, which he would have to be to have been Emeline's brother. Also, Mary Drury would have had to be a sister, not a sister-in-law, since she was Emeline's sister who married a Drury. For Mary, enumerated as a cousin in 1880, to have been a cousin, he would have had to be the son of either Joseph, since she was the daughter of Joseph's brother John.
