Hannah GLEASON37429 adminstratrix of her husband's estate on 26 January 1761 in Acton, Middlesex, MA.37430 Sally K. Eaton reported "Samuel Temple left no will, and on 26 January 1761, his wife Hannah was appointed administratrix. Thomas Stearns and Robert Powers, both yeomen (small land owners) from Littleton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts were also named. Samuel Temple's real estate was "apprised" at 69 pounds, 6 shillings and 8 pence. His personal estate was valued at 13 pounds, 12 shillings and 11 pence - making his total assets about 83 pounds. His debts totaled over 19 pounds, and the "apprisers" recommended that Hannah sell property to pay the debts and provide for her children. However, they also showed concern for her situation and suggested that she be allowed some liberty." She recorder of land on 22 June 1761 in MA.37430 Sally K. Eaton reported "On 22 June 1761 Hannah officially recorded four deeds for land her husband had purchased: three parcels in Pepperell between 1754 and 1758 and one land purchase in Acton in 1758. Samuel's 1758 Pepperell land sale was not recorded until 1772. It would appear that the grantee had the responsibility of seeing that the deed was recorded.

"On Christmas Day 1766, Hannah Temple bought land, Lot 15 in the 3rd Division in the northern part of Acton. It appears to adjoin her husband's original property. She paid Edward Wright two pounds for fourteen acres, at a time when land was selling for two to three pounds an acre.

"Hannah sold the land in her husband's estate thirteen years after his death. Both she and her eldest son Samuel signed the document. Hannah sold the property to pay the debts of her husband's estate. She posted notices in Acton, Cambridge, Littleton, Westford and Concord at least thirty days in advance of the sale -- stating that the land would be sold to the highest bidder. On 10 May 1774, Joseph Robbins bought Samuel Temple's original thirty acres for seventy-four pounds. The property was described as orcharding, mowing, plough and wood land in Acton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Hannah was able to keep the fourteen acres which she bought herself in 1767.

"On 17 April 1775 Hannah attested to the 30 acre land sale before Justice of the Peace John Cuming. This is the last record we have of Hannah Temple. It is not known how long she lived or where she died. Her son Samuel continued to live in Acton until his death in 1826, and it can be presumed that his mother lived with him and most likely died in Acton.

"At that time in Massachusetts, when a husband died his land passed to his sons. Typically the oldest son received twice as much land as a second son. Since children cannot manage their own financial affairs, a guardian would be appointed for a young child - even though the mother was still living. If a child was fourteen or older, he could choose his own guardian. The guardian was only responsible for managing the child's assets.

"In 1767, when Samuel was fifteen, he chose Mark White as his guardian. Interestingly, Mr. White is the one who had sold Samuel's father the property the family lived on, and he lived on the neighboring property. In January 1774, when Samuel's brother Ebenezer was seventeen, he chose Joseph Robbins as his guardian. The decision was recorded in a court document in April 1774 and the next month Joseph Robbins bought the land that Ebenezer's father had owned at the time of his death."
She died after April 1775.23316,37430 Her death date is unknown and unrecorded. When her son turned 14 he could choose his own guardian, and he chose Mary White. This is hardly conclusive that Hannah was dead, but it is suggestive. Some Temple Pedigrees suggested she died before 1761, but that was incorrect.
