Colonel John KOEN^1941,50574 was born on 27 January 1759.¹⁹⁴¹ He served in the military between 1777 and 1780.¹⁹⁴¹ Enlisted in Moore Co., NC, 30 May 1777. Koen further recalled serving with General Gates during the victory at Saratoga and with Washington at Valley Forge.

Koen was with General Lincoln in 1780 during the surrender at Charleston to the British. Of the 1800 prisoners, only 700 survived the prison ships. Koen was one of these.

Due to his gallant service, Koen was appointed Colonel of the militia in Pasquotank County after the war, and received a pension until his death. He died on 5 September 1840 at the age of 81.¹⁹⁴¹ Mentioned as the son-in-law of Thomas Temple and as co-executor of Thomas' estate in 1791. It is not clear if his marriage to Ann and also to Susannah is a confusion, possibly that Susannah and Ann were the same person, or that he married them at different times?

His granddaughter Margaret Etheridge, wife of William S. Temple, recalled some of his stories, recorded in the New Bern Library, "In Ancient Albemarle," Ch. XI. He served at the victory at Trenton on 26 Dec 1776. He also disagreed with the picture of Washington crossing the Delaware by boat, relating that they walked across on the ice.
