|Henry D. TEMPLE was born about 1840. He died on 8 November 1871 at the age of 31 in Oxford, Lafayette, MS.95272 His obituary said, "Died in Oxford, Mississippi, on the night of the 8th of November, 1871, Dr. Henry D. Temple, who from his appearance was aged about thirty years. Little is known of his family or history. During his residence here he had frequent attacks produced by the excessive use of narcotics, which he used to excess." His death date does not fit any known Henry D. Temple, Temples or Temple(s), and therefore his name is suspect. Further, he does not show up in the 1870 census anywhere in MS. Not found in 1870.|
Henry D. TEMPLE was born about 1843 in MA. He served in the military in 1864.95273 According to national cemetery records, he served as a private in B company of the 17th US Infantry. Conflicting information exists on his unit. Some less reliable sources confirm he served as a private in the 17th US infantry. Some records indicate he may have served in the 37th Infantry, but they do not indicate which. I believe it might have been the 37th Massachusetts, because only 3 units of 37th Infantry participated in the Battle of the Wilderness, two of them in the Confederacy (VA and NC). There were no Temple, Temple(s), or Temples assigned to the southern units. The only two Temples assigned to ANY unit of 37th Infantry were Lorenzo and William Temples of MS. That left only the 37th MA or the 37th US for Henry. It is possible, because of this uncertainty, that if he was serving in the 37th or 17th US Infantry, that he was not Henry D. Temple from MA. He died on 10 May 1864 at the age of 21 in Spotsylvania Co., VA.22,95274,95275 Died in the Battle of the Wilderness at Laurel Hill farm. Buried in the National Cemetery in Fredericksburg, VA, Site 1785. Some less reliable sources give 6 May, whereas the Civil War service records give 10 May. Based on his being in the 37th Massachusetts at the Battle of the Wilderness, he was probably from MA, but no unique identification has been established for him. In 1850, only 4 Henry Temples were found with birth in MA, and none of them were Henry D. Temple.
Probably the brother of Private F. Temple, who also died in the battle.
