He died several days later in Lake City. He was buried in Duplain Cemetery, Clinton Co., MI.

Apparently, the shooting had to do with George trying to collect payment for work he had done. John H. (Jack) Farrell, bartender of the tavern at Stittsville, was arrested for the shooting, which took place in his tavern.

Rae Willoughby Ford, supplied a condensation of the newspaper articles, as follows:

"June 2, 1903....... shot with a revolver. John H. Farrell, ( aka Jack ), the bartender was arrested. The charge, assault with intent to do great bodily harm
less than murder.

"June 9, 1903.....pronounced dead. Inquest was held, John Farrell bound to circuit court on charge of murder.

"June 17, 1903 trial set for fall term.

"August 5, 1903 People vs. John H. Farrell murder, was put over until Oct. term. Defendant allowed bail, $ 5, 000.

"Oct 7, 1903 one lawyer wanted an adjournment for a later date, because his mother had died. Judge denied, jury consideration began. Jury chosen, and quartered in the court house for the night. During the evening one of the jurors missed his footing on
a step and fell injuring himself. The doctor who assisted the injured juror, also happened to be the same Doctor who pronounced George dead, and was
there to testify at the trial. This complicated matters for interaction between a juror and witness. Case postponed, until Nov. 2, 1903

"Nov. 2, 1903 new jury selected.

"Nov 3, 4, 5, 6, 1903 testimony heard and cross-examination

"Nov. 7, 1903 ( Saturday ) 11 jury left court room, returned, 2:30, Verdict of guilty of manslaughter.

"Nov. 9, 1903, John H. Farrell was taken by sheriff Beuthien to Jackson State Prison, to begin sentence of not less of 7 1/2 years or more than 15 years." He was a lumberman.51290 The information on George and the circumstances of his death were provided by Rae Willoughby Ford, <mrs4rd@houston.rr.com>, from the Clinton Republican, and the trial notices concerning the shooting and later conviction and prison term for the shooter. Middle initial in 1880 was F and on his grave marker. His parents were both from PA. There were two George Temples in PA who were first cousins and who might be confused for each other. One was George F. b 1872 PA, of Franklin Twp., son of Joseph and Anna. The other was George F or P, b 1875 PA, of Jordan Twp., son of Wesley and Lavina. While the son of Wesley is most consistent with the census and other information, there is a chance that their data should be the other way around. Parents: Wesley E. TEMPLE-21790 and Lavina REESE-21804.

George Peabody TEMPLE45377 was born on 8 December 1861 in Lauderdale Co., MS.45379,45380,53450,53452 The Mount Carmel cemetery records give 8 Dec 1859, but the year must be wrong, since he does not appear in the 1860 census. In the 1870 census, he was given as 8 years of age. So, while I suspect the providers of the cemetery data knew his birthday, they may not have known the year. What appears here is a synthesis of the birthday and the 1870 birth year. He appeared in the census in June 1870 in Big Oak, Lauderdale, MS.45379 He appeared in the census in June 1880 in Lauderdale Co., MS.45380 George died on 27 December 1899 at the age of 38 in Lauderdale Co., MS.53450,53452,80108 Buried in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Cemetery, Lauderdale Co., MS. Some sources indicate his gravestone death date is 17 Dec 1893, but this is not correct. That date does not allow for his being the father of Lillian and George (#2). Some sources, such as his Masonic Lodge, give 22 Dec 1899, but also give his middle initial as C. Based on Masonic Lodge records, where he is given as George C. Temple, there seems some sort of confusion. A grave marker in Mt. Carmel, MS, gives a death date that is not correct for George Temple, who could not have died in 1893. George C. Temple, however, died in Dec 1899. Parents: John Wesley Foster (Wesley) TEMPLE Sr.-16956 and Sarah Alice JONES-18537.

Spouse: Sarah Alice (Alice) WALKER-18781. Sarah Alice (Alice) WALKER and George Peabody TEMPLE were married on 15 August 1882 in Lauderdale Co., MS.22239,36975 License issued 11 Aug 1882. His father was from the US and his mother from KY in 1930, but both from KY in 1910. The informant on his death certificate was Mrs. G.P. Temple, so it appears he married a second time. That second wife might be the Gertrude Temple who died in Harrison Co., KY in 1966. Parents: James M. TEMPLE-30120 and Patsy Ann STEPHENS-30121.

Spouse: Harriet Viola (Hattie) ARMSTRONG-50680. Harriet Viola (Hattie) ARMSTRONG and George Pearl (Pearley) TEMPLE were married on 9 October 1889 in Hamilton Co., OH.9464,9475,9481 Children were: Melva L. TEMPLE-50683.
