The Freeman's Journal of 16 January 1873 had an ad which stated, "Do not purchase any machine until you call on George E. Temple on Chestnut Street. Signed, Geo. A. Temple, Agent. Cooperstown." Apparently, he took over sales about 12 December. A previous issue of the Freeman's Journal had Mr. E.C. Keyes as the agent on 5 December. Starting 12 December, that had changed to George Aldrich Temple. George appeared in the census in June 1880 in Mauston, Juneau, WI.8982 He gave no occupation in 1880. He moved about 1890 in Washington, DC.56577,91909 George appears only in the 1890 and 1891 City Directories. His obituary indicates he resided longer in the Washington DC area, but this does not seem to be the case. It is not clear where George was between 1891 and about 1905.

There is some evidence that he moved with his family to Washington DC in 1881. In 1890/1 he was a teacher in Washington, DC.91910 George lived in Phoenix Mills, Oswego, NY on 4 December 1895.91911 In June 1900 he was a cotton mill folder in Otsego, Otsego, NY.59236 Between 1905 and 1907 he was a knitter in Utica, Oneida, NY.91912 George lived in Utica, Oneida, NY in December 1905. He died on 20 May 1907 at the age of 65 in Utica, Oneida, NY.91912,91913,91914,91915 Buried in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown, NY.

The Utica Observer, Tuesday, 14 May 1907 reported:
"TIRED OF LIVING, SHOT HIMSELF
"George Temple, Aged 65 Years, Tried to End Life"
"Fired Bullet Under Heart Shortly Before Noon Today --Then Walked to Head of Stairs and Asked for Water--Taken to General Hospital."
"'Bring me some water,' George Temple, aged 65 years called from the head of the stairs in the second story of the Utica Knitting Mill's boarding house at 2 Churchill Ave., about 11 o'clock this morning.
"Temple had been drinking considerably for the past three or four weeks and had failed to come down for breakfast this morning. 'You better get the water yourself if you want it,' some one told him.
"'I can't,' said Temple. 'I just shot myself.'
"Mrs. Fred Reymonda, proprietor of the boarding house, rushed upstairs and found Temple had told the truth. He had fired a bullet from a small-sized revolver into his body just beneath the heart, narrowly missing that organ. He was weak from loss of blood and suffered considerable pain. Temporary assistance was given the injured man and a hurried call brought the police ambulance to the place. Temple was taken to the General Hospital, where Drs. Kinloch and Church gave him every possible medical care.
"'What did you shoot yourself for?' Mrs. Reymonda asked while the arrival of the ambulance was awaited.
"'I wanted to die,' said Temple with determination, 'and I guess I'm going all right.'
"'You won't go until your time comes,' the boarding house lady told him with conviction. But Temple insisted that he had hurried the time all right.
"At the hospital it was seen that Temple had received a serious wound and Coroner Dodd was summoned to take his ante-mortem statement. He told the coroner that he was tired of life and that death would be a relief. Three years ago Temple said his wife secured a divorce from him in Washington, DC, where they lived at the time, and since then the disheartened man found little of pleasure in life.
"Temple came to Utica shortly after his wife obtained the divorce and has since lived in the city. For the past year and a half, he has been employed in the Utica Knitting Mill on Erie Street and boarded at the company's boarding house conducted by Mrs. Reymonda. Four weeks ago he quit work and since that time had been drinking excessively. His divorced wife is an employee of the pension office in Washington and one son lives in Baltimore.
"The wounded man retained consciousness and bore his sufferings bravely. He talked freely with those around him and was resting nicely at last reports from the hospital. His condition is critical but the doctors think he has a chance for recovery."

The Utica Herald Dispatch, Tuesday Evening, 14 May 1907, p.2, reported:
"GEORGE TEMPLE TIRED OF LIVING
"Tried to End His Earthly Career
"Coroner Dodd Summoned
"Fired A Bullet Into His Left Breast in Highland Mill Boarding House Saying He Wanted to Die--Broken Health Attributed as Cause.
"George Temple, aged 65, shot himself this morning in the left breast, near the heart, in the mill boarding house conducted by Mrs. Reymonde on Erie Street. He did so with suicidal intent and said he cared no longer to live. He was conveyed to the General Hospital, where Coroner Dodd went to take his statement, should it be necessary to use such a declaration.
"Mr. Temple went to board with Mrs. Reymonde about a year and a half ago and found employment in the big mill of the Utica Knitting Company across the street. Nothing unusual, seemingly, occurred during the course of his life or during that period until about four weeks ago, when he suddenly, and apparently without any reason, quit work. Then he began drinking heavily and kept it up until he endeavored to wind up his earthly career. He has money in the bank and only owes for one week's board.
"It is not known just when Temple shot himself. About 11 o'clock this morning he went to the head of the stairs in his boarding house and called to Mrs. Reymonde asking her to bring water as he had shot himself. Mrs. Reymonde did as requested and on hurrying to his room found the revolver, which she said was a small one, lying on a chair. She asked him why he had shot himself and he said he had done so because he had wanted to die.
"To Coroner Dodd, at the hospital, Temple said he wanted to die because he was broken in health and spirits and intimated that family troubles were at the bottom of it. He said he was divorced from his wife, Ellen Kathleen Temple, who holds a position in the Government pension office, and that he came here from Washington 3 years ago. He has a son, Fay Temple, who is a stenographer in the Equitable Building, Baltimore, Md. He also has a brother, Seth Temple, who lives on Harper Street in this city.
"The bullet entered the lung, but has not been located. Late this afternoon there was no change in his condition. He had not come out of the anesthetics."

The next day, the Utica Daily Press, 15 May 1907, p. 3 reported:
"HE WANTED TO DIE
"And the Indications Are That His Wishes Will Be Gratified
"At his room in the Utica Knitting Mills boarding house, 2 Churchill Avenue, yesterday morning, George Temple aged 65 years, shot himself in the left breast near the heart, with a 22-caliber revolver. At just what time the shooting occurred is not known, but about 11 a.m. Temple, who was on the second floor of the boarding house, called down stairs for some water, saying that he had shot himself. Mrs. Fred Reymonda, who conducts the boarding house, immediately ran upstairs and found that what he said was true. He was weak from loss of blood and suffered considerable pain. Mrs. Reymonda asked him why he had shot himself, and he replied, 'I wanted to die and I guess I'm going all right.' Temporary assistance was given the wounded man and as soon as possible the city ambulance reached the scene and he was removed to the General Hospital.
"Coroner Dodd was notified and went to the hospital to take Mr. Temple's statement. The latter told the coroner that he was tired of life and that death would be a relief. Three years ago, Temple said, his wife secured a divorce from him in Washington DC, where they lived at the time, and since then the disheartened man found little of pleasure in life.
"Temple came to Utica shortly after his wife obtained the divorce and has since lived in the city. For the past year and a half he has been employed in the Utica Knitting Mill on Erie Street and boarded at the company's boarding house conducted by Mrs. Reymonda. Four weeks ago he quit work and since that time has been drinking excessively. His divorced wife is an employee of the pension office in Washington and one son resides in Baltimore.
"When the doctors at the hospital examined Mr. Temple they found that the ball had penetrated the lung and that the wound was of a very serious nature. It is feared that he will not recover."

By Friday, 17 May, the Utica Observer reported that he was "slowly failing at the General Hospital this afternoon. His recovery is not looked for."

On 26 May 1907, the Utica Sunday Tribune, p. 16, reported:
"George A. Temple, who shot himself in the breast May 14 in the mill boarding house conducted by Mrs. Reymonde on the Highlands, died in the General Hospital Monday.
"George A. Temple was born in Middlefield, Otsego County, 65 years ago. He had made his residence in various places and at one time resided in Washington, DC. He was a clerk by occupation. He came to this city from Cooperstown about four years ago. For about a year and a half he had been employed in the carding room of the Utica Knitting Company. He is survived by a son, Lafayette Temple of Washington, DC; one brother, Seth Temple of 6 Harper Street, this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Charles D. Cook of Whitesboro and Miss Mary E. Temple of Cooperstown. He was a member of the Universalist Church."

The Cooperstown Freeman's Journal reported:
"George A. Temple, formerly of this village, who last week shot himself in his room at a boarding house in Utica, died at the General Hospital in that city Monday morning. It had not been expected at any time since his removal to the hospital that he would live, and his sisters, brother and sone were summoned to his bedside. He was 65 years old, and was well known in this section of the county. His remains were brought to this village on Tuesday and the interment made in Lakewood cemetery."

His death certificate reported his death date as 20 May, and his age as 45. The Coroner called 3 witnesses - George's brother Seth D. Temple, Mrs. Mary Reymonda, and Dr. D. R. Kinloch (the attending physician). The conclusion was that George died from a self-inflicted wound, and the immediate cause of death was shock. He died at 5:10 in the morning of 20 May.

Although the news reports include mention of an antemortem interview, no such records seems to exist. The only reason provided for George's suicide is consistent among the newspaper reports and the Coroner's witnesses - George insisted he was tired of living. His brother Seth had seen him two days prior to his suicide, but noted nothing different as a reason. Seth revealed a revolver had been taken from George on 9 May, so the decision was also not a sudden one.

Seth mentioned that George had been despondent and melancholy of late, and was a man of intemperate habits. Seth also reported that George expressed no sorrow at having shot himself, but was sorry he had not done a quicker job of it. An alcoholic who attempted suicide several times. Parents: Seth Jones TEMPLE-24 and Emeline SMITH-5086.
