Since they were not indicated as twins in 1910, there must be some error. Mary B. TEMPLE was born in 1907.14826 The place given for her birthplace made no sense in the 1920 census. Something like Un NS. She was elected as State Representative between 1952 and 1968 in Cambridge, Middlesex, MA.61297 "Mary B. (Temple) Newman, a homemaker who rose through the ranks of Massachusetts politics to become the first Cambridge woman elected to the Legislature and the first Quaker to serve there, died of cancer Dec. 6. She was 86.
Known on Beacon Hill as the "fighting Quaker from Cambridge," Mrs. Newman resigned as vice president of the League of Women Voters to enter politics in 1952.
Running as a Republican, she was elected to the state House of Representatives, representing the 2nd Middlesex District in Cambridge.
"One area in which far too few women are employed, and one of the most important jobs in Massachusetts, is politics," she once said.
A fiercely partisan politician, Mrs. Newman went on to serve 16 years in the Legislature and two years on the state Parole Board.
U.S. Rep. John Joseph Moakley (D-South Boston) was sworn in with Mrs. Newman in 1952.
"Actually, she was `affirmed,' not sworn in (because of her religious affiliation)," Moakley said. "She had a great reputation in the House for having a passionate commitment to her work and getting to the meat of the issues."
By 1970, Mrs. Newman had gained enough political clout to earn the Republican nomination for secretary of state. She lost the bid, but her campaign slogan, "Get Yourself a Good Secretary," made her point that women could make good in the male-dominated political arena.
Mrs. Newman then took a $15-an-hour job as consultant to the Committee on Commerce and Labor. She held the position for eight years and was responsible for legislation concerning equal employment opportunities for women, minority groups, the handicapped and mentally retarded.
Appointed secretary of Manpower Affairs in 1971 by former Gov. Francis Sargent, Mrs. Newman continued to be a liberating voice in politics, calling on women to "shed your aprons and get into government."
As Manpower secretary, and the only woman in Gov. Sargent's cabinet, she supervised the Department of Labor and Industry, the Division of Employment Security and the Industrial Accident Board.
In 1976, Mrs. Newman was chosen New England regional director of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare."
